It was a very prosperous and populous island, having a “hundred cities.”

The character of the people is described in Paul's quotation from “one of their own poets” (Epimenides) in his epistle to Titus: “The Cretans are alway liars, evil beasts, slow bellies” (Titus 1:12). Jews from Crete were in Jerusalem on the day of Pentecost (Acts 2:11). The island was visited by Paul on his voyage to Rome (Acts 27).

Here Paul subsequently left Titus (1:5) “to ordain elders.” Some have supposed that it was the original home of the Caphtorim (q.v.) or Philistines.

Pure – Holy… sexually purity 5. Workers at Home Not working only at home (prov. 31) Take Care of this most important Work…Active Focus 6. King – Good 7. Submissive to Own Husbands Not female submissive to male No forced compliance by husband Freely embrace your role of Supporting His leadership. Focus on Young Women and the problem at Crete: Women set free, equal value, Gospel Focus; More Important?! Still… Most important work is Family… (Tough Role!) Younger Men Titus 2: 6-8 (NIV Poor) 1. Be Senisble – Key word…self-controll 2. Titus be an Example…. (Youngor Old?) a) Service b) Doctrine c) Manner of Life d) Speech Beyond Reproach…. Not Condemned! The Opponent!! Observations 1. Times have changed; People have Not. Be Slow to dismiss this Text! 2. Equality does not negate distinctions of Gender. Different physically, emotionally, psychologically Different Roles 3. We Need Each Other. Generation Gap is Bad. Young without Old lose wisdom. Old without the young lose focus."
